What is Pilates?

Pilates is a full body exercise programme developed in the 1920’s onwards by Joseph Pilates.  Born in Germany in 1883,  Joseph travelled to England as a boxer and body builder but when the First World War broke out he was interned in a camp on the Isle of Mann.  Here he used his exercise knowledge to help people recover in the infirmary.  After the war he moved to New York and set up his Pilates Studio and soon developed a reputation for helping ballet dancers return to performance after injury.  Pilates remains very popular with dancers, elite sport persons, weekend runners and cyclists and helps those recovering from injury.

Pilates continues to evolve but the basic principles remain the same.  A focus on the body and mind connection, precision and control of movement, breathing control and flow of movement.  Regular practice will help to strengthen your muscles and improve the flexibility of your body. There are 34 classic movements which have developed into a system of exercises with limitless possibilities and variations and this adds interest to every class.  No two of my classes are ever the same.

Physiotherapy led (Physio led) Pilates Classes

What is Physiotherapy led Pilates?

I use my physiotherapy knowledge and extensive experience to customise the exercises and have had people with joint replacements, generalised arthritis, lower back pain, osteoporosis, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome in my classes over the years.

Why choose a physio led Pilates class?

I write each class with the individuals attending in mind. I do not follow a generic plan but create bespoke classes for my attendees.  I take pride in ensuring everyone has good basic technique (even on Zoom) and offer advice and guidance to ensure everyone is moving safely despite any health limitations.

As a physiotherapist I assess everyone’s ability and advise on the most suitable class to attend.  I can modify the Pilates exercises to suit you and your health needs.  I have almost 30 years of rehabilitation experience and I use this to ensure that everyone in the class is exercising at a level which is suitable for their ability.  This may include advising against some exercises but substituting these with some which would be more suitable, e.g for someone with limited shoulder movement.
